MG4 EV XPower Review: Unveiling the Affordable Electric Hot Hatch Marvel

The MG4 EV XPower review begins with a full disclosure: I’m a big fan of the standard MG4 EV family hatchback. It’s not just a great value electric car, with the range starting at an accessible £26,995, but it’s also remarkably well-packaged, sharply styled, and delivers a surprisingly engaging driving experience. When you factor in MG Motor UK’s generous seven-year warranty, it truly becomes a compelling choice for anyone ready to switch to 100% electric motoring. The MG4 EV XPower is a testament to MG’s innovation.

The XPower is MG’s sporty iteration of the immensely popular MG4 – which was the second biggest-selling EV of 2023. This MG4 EV XPower review will dive deep into what makes this hot hatch tick and whether it lives up to the hype. Unlike many hot versions of standard cars from other manufacturers, MG has opted for a subtle approach with the XPower. There’s no outlandish or garish body kit screaming for attention, a design choice many will appreciate. This subtle yet powerful stance is a key aspect of the MG4 EV XPower review.

Subtle Styling and Interior Touches: A Closer Look at the MG4 EV XPower

While the exterior doesn’t shout its performance credentials, this MG4 EV XPower review notes its discerning aesthetic upgrades. It boasts larger wheels, performance-oriented Bridgestone Turanza tyres, larger brake discs paired with eye-catching orange brake calipers, a contrasting black roof, and the introduction of a new, exclusive Racing Green colour option. These details subtly hint at the beast within the MG4 EV XPower.

Inside the cabin, the sporty theme continues with red stitching, Alcantara trim on the seats, and sleek metal pedals. Beyond these enhancements, the interior largely retains the familiar layout of the standard MG4, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system – thankfully complemented by convenient physical short-cut buttons below it – and an additional 7.0-inch digital driver’s display. Our MG4 EV XPower review finds the build quality in the cabin to be perfectly acceptable for its price point, though it does feature a few too many scratchy plastic surfaces. The infotainment system, while functional, tends to be on the more basic side.

The Heart of the Beast: Power and Performance in the MG4 EV XPower

Of course, the most significant difference between the standard MG4 EV and the XPower lies beneath its understated exterior. This is where the MG4 EV XPower review gets truly exciting. While the regular MG4 features a single rear motor with a choice of three battery options and power outputs up to 243bhp, the XPower receives a singular battery choice (64kWh) but crucially gains a second, powerful 201bhp motor at the front, transforming it into an all-wheel-drive powerhouse.

With the rear motor contributing 228bhp, the combined output of the MG4 EV XPower equates to a remarkable 429bhp with a staggering 443lb of torque. This immense power delivers a blistering 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.8 seconds – performance that rivals much more expensive sports cars – all for a still-competitive price of £36,495. This combination of raw power and affordability is central to any MG4 EV XPower review.

Crucially, MG’s engineers have not just added power; they’ve also upgraded the MG4 EV XPower to ensure all that immense oomph (it is, after all, the most potent MG ever made) can be distributed more effectively. The new Dynamic Cornering Control System features a locking electronic differential and Intelligent Motor Control, allowing for sophisticated torque vectoring between all four wheels. This sophisticated system dramatically enhances the driving dynamics for the MG4 EV XPower. There’s also revised spring and damper tuning, stiffer anti-roll bars, and sharper steering, with MG claiming that the overall suspension stiffness has been increased by an impressive 25%.

Range, Charging, and Driving Dynamics: An Honest MG4 EV XPower Review

When it comes to range, the 64kWh battery of the MG4 EV XPower provides a relatively modest official WLTP figure of 239 miles on a single charge. However, as this MG4 EV XPower review must honestly state, the real-world range is likely to be well shy of 200 miles, particularly in colder conditions or if you frequently unleash its immense power. The good news is its rapid charging capabilities. The MG4 EV XPower boasts a maximum DC rapid charging rate of 150kW, which should deliver a 10% to 80% charge in a respectable 35 minutes via a compatible 150kW public rapid charger. For home charging, a 10-100% charge takes approximately 8.5 hours using a 7kW home wall box.

On the road, the impressive instant torque is immediately obvious and addictive, especially when engaged in Sport mode with launch control activated. It’s gut-wrenchingly fast in a straight line, offering a thrilling burst of acceleration. However, this novelty can wear off a little when you observe your miles/kWh indicator plummeting closer to 2 than 3. Another minor quibble in this MG4 EV XPower review is the desire for a special physical button on the steering wheel to activate launch control, rather than having to delve into the touchscreen menu. Despite lugging around an extra electric motor, at 1,800kg, the MG4 EV XPower is still relatively light for an EV, contributing to its agile feel.

One of the joys of the regular rear-wheel-drive MG4 EV is its handling, which is notably more dynamic than most electric cars, especially within its affordable price range. The MG4 EV XPower largely maintains this impressive characteristic, but given the sheer power on tap, it could benefit from a bit more fine-tuning to truly earn the title of an all-round hot hatch. It still manages to stay remarkably flat in challenging corners, showcasing good composure, but a touch more refinement in its handling dynamics wouldn’t go amiss. The ride quality feels slightly firmer than the standard MG4 EV, as expected, but it remains decent for daily driving, with ample grip and powerful stopping capabilities on offer.

Like the regular MG4 EV, the XPower model is surprisingly wider than you might initially think, boasting a long wheelbase. This translates into generous interior space for passengers, both in the front and the rear. Despite the sporty roofline, there’s commendable head and legroom in the back, ensuring comfort for all occupants. Furthermore, the MG4 EV XPower offers a healthy luggage capacity of 363 litres, which expands to a cavernous 1,165 litres with the rear seats folded down, making it highly practical for a family. Our only suggestion for improvement, considering the significant performance boost, would be the addition of more figure-hugging sports seats upfront to better support spirited driving.

MG4 EV XPower

Ultimately, the MG4 EV XPower review concludes that this is an incredibly impressive package. As long as you can live with the slight range hit (the cheaper MG4 EV Trophy Extended Range can achieve 323 miles), its supercar-like acceleration and dynamic ride will never fail to put a smile on your face.

Verdict: The MG4 EV XPower is an all-electric five-door family hatch with a distinctly dark side. Should you choose to unleash the full 429bhp on tap, it’s capable of competing with performance models two or three times its price. Sharply-styled, safe, and offering incredible value for money while remaining practical, it also provides peace of mind courtesy of a generous seven-year warranty.
